ORA Indigenous Care Document

The ORA Northern Ontario Committee is pleased to share this resource. This document was created to help share some knowledge and pearls around providing care to Indigenous patients. Many of us see patients that identify as First Nations, Inuit, Metis, or from other Indigenous groups; and this population may have some unique aspects that impact rheumatologic care provision due to various circumstances. Although the document was created by the Northern Ontario committee, many Indigenous individuals both live and travel to southern Ontario and access care there. We are hopeful that reviewing this short summary document, as well as being able to reference it when the need arises, may help in bridging the gap between our “Western” medicine lens and Indigenous healthcare provision. We also acknowledge that within these groups there are many different communities with different cultures, values, and preferences; these are meant to be a guide but not all of these principles will apply in all circumstances.
